For generations, ʻamaʻama (mullet) sustained the people of Maunalua and were a prized species deeply connected to Native Hawaiian culture, food systems, and stewardship practices. The loko iʻa (fishponds) of Maunalua were carefully engineered by our kūpuna to raise ʻamaʻama in the nutrient-rich brackish waters where freshwater and ocean water meet. These loko iʻa reflected a profound understanding of the environment and the kuleana to care for the resources that nourish the community. Although many of the loko iʻa were lost through modern development, the restoration efforts of the Maunalua Fishpond Heritage Center seek to reconnect the people of Maunalua to their ancestral knowledge, cultural practices, and relationship with the bay.
